Not all deaf people have full access to language from an early age. Language deprivation, or delayed or limited exposure to a first language, shapes how people communicate and process information. This also means we, as interpreters, have to work differently. With Ege Karar, researcher and certified Deaf interpreter with 10+ years' experience, we look at how language deprivation alters the way we interpret, shifting our work from simply transferring words to building comprehension, making understanding the ultimate goal.
